A lived-in 17th-century castle at Clonegal, still a family home, with a famously spooky Temple of the Goddess in the basement. The grounds have a 600-year-old yew walk, formal gardens, a lake and follies to roam, and there are resident animals about the place. Mainly open May to September, with guided house tours. The gardens suit all ages, and the house tour is best for older children.
