One of Ireland's great early monastic sites, founded around 544 on a bend of the Shannon. Children can roam among two round towers, a ruined cathedral and small churches, and there are high crosses and hundreds of carved grave slabs. The visitor centre is closed for works at the moment, though the site itself stays open, so check before you go. Best for about 6 and up. Free with a Heritage Card.
