Cahir Castle

A castle straight out of a storybook, one of Ireland's largest and best-preserved, set on a rocky island in the River Suir. Climb the keep and walk the battlements, find the working portcullis, and spot the cannonball still lodged in the wall from the 1599 siege. There are free guided tours in summer, and it's a short riverside walk to the Swiss Cottage. A firm favourite with castle-loving kids. An OPW site in Cahir.
